117 BNP-Jamaat men among 198 held in 8 districts
09 November 2015, Nirapad News: Law enforcers have arrested 198 people, including 117 leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir, from Khulna, Satkhira, Joypurhat, Meherpur, Bagerhat, Jhenidah, Sherpur and Rajshahi districts.
The arrests were made in separate drives conducted on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
According to reports reaching the news desk, 65 people, including 18 BNP-Jamaat-Shibir men, were held in nine upazilas of Khulna.
Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Abdur Rashid said a team of Dumuria Police Station arrested 18 people, including Maguraghona Dakhil Madrasah superintendent Shahidul Islam, from different parts of the upazila.
Another police team arrested a BNP activist from Debipur of Rupsha upazila while the rest were arrested from seven other upazilas of the district.
In Rajshahi, Charghat upazila BNP joint secretary Abdus Salam was arrested by a police team in the early hours of Sunday.
Salam was accused in four arson cases filed with Charghat Police Station, said officer-in-charge of the police station Nibaran Chandra Barman.
Another team of Mohanpur Police Station arrested Shibir man Sharif Reza, 20, along with two foreign pistols and 57 bullets from Baroipukur village of the upazila on Sunday morning.
In Satkhira, joint forces teams in their special drives arrested 50 people, including 38 BNP and Jamaat men, from different areas of eight upazilas.
The arrestees include 37 leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir, one BNP activist and 12 other fugitives in different cases, sources at district DB police said.
In Joypurhat, district unit BNP organising secretary Matiur Rahman was among 29 leaders and activists of the party and Jamaat-Shibir arrested by police from different parts of the district.
They were wanted in several violence cases filed with different police stations during hartal and blockade programme called by the BNP-led alliance, police super of the district Mollah Nazrul Islam said.
In Meherpur, police arrested 22 people from the district in their drives during the period.
Of them, 15 Jamaat men were wanted in different cases filed for sabotage, said additional superintendent of police Ahmar Uzzaman.
In Bagerhat, police arrested 19 BNP and Jamaat men from separates areas of nine upazilas.
The arrestees include 12 Jamaat-Shibir men and seven BNP activists.
In Jhenidah, police arrested nine Jamaat-Shibir men from different upazilas, including Sadar and Kaliganj, in the early hours of Sunday.
They were arrested on apprehension that they can create any anarchy in the district, police super Azahar Ali said.
In Sherpur, police arrested two Jamaat-Shibir men, including Dhanshail union unit Jamaat secretary, from their houses in Jhenigathi upazila on Saturday midnight.
They were wanted by police in a violence case filed with Jhenigati Police Station during the BNP-led alliance’s blockade programme.
