15,000-hectare land under wheat cultivation in Panchagarh
12 Jan 2015, Nirapad News: The department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and farmers are expecting a bumper production of wheat in five upazilas of the district during the current season.
A total of 15,000 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in the district with the production target of 45,000 tonnes of wheat.
Of the total land 7,000 hectares of land have been brought under prodip variety, 4,000 hectares under Bijoy, 2,500 hectares under Sotapdi and 1,500 hectares of land under BARI-25 variety.
Deputy Director of DAE M Asraf Ali told BSS wheat cultivation increased this year than the last year because of less cultivation cost and favorable weather.
Farmer Abdul Majid of village Sabuspara under Debiganj upazila of the district said at least 10-mound of wheat are expected from one bigha of land. Each mound of wheat is sold at Tk 800. Last year I profit Tk 8,000 from one bigha of land.
The DAE has supplied all necessary seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other agriculture inputs at a free of cost among the farmers to achieve the production target.
Besides, the department has also imparted training to the farmers to make them acquainted with the modern methods of wheat cultivation.
