180 detained for defying fishing ban
02 October 2015, Nirapad News: Coast Guard detained 180 fishermen with 60 mound of Hilsa from outer anchorage of chittagong port.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of coast guard conducted a drive in the Bay between Thursday night and Friday morning and seized 12 fishing boats, five-mound brood hilsa from each boat.
Coast Guard East Zone operation officer M Durul Huda told banglanews that 15 days, from September 25 to October 9, are the peak breeding period for hilsa.
The government has imposed a 15-day ban on the catching of Hilsa fish effective from September 25, prohibiting all sales and stocking of Hilsa.
The restriction has been imposed in a bid to ensure safe spawning and increase of production of the popular fish.
The 180 fishermen were nabbed for defying ban, he added.
