1,892 new cases, 36 deaths in the last 24 hours

Six months after Bangladesh announced the detection of its first coronavirus patients, the number of officially confirmed Covid-19 cases inched closer to 3.3 lakh on Tuesday.

The health authorities announced the detection of 1,892 new cases, taking the tally to 329,251. Among them, 4,552 have died – 36 in the last 24 hours.

Bangladesh announced its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.

In the last 24 hours, 14,973 samples were tested. So far 1,659,697 samples have been tested in the country and 19.84 percent of them have turned out to be positive.

During this period, 3,236 patients have recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 227,809. The recovery rate is now over 69 percent, according to a press release by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

At present, there are 96,890 active cases in the country. Bangladesh is seeing 1,933 infections and 1,333 recoveries per million while over 26 are dying, the DGHS said.

Among the new deceased, 28 are aged above 50 years. DGHS data show that 50 percent of the total deceased are aged above 60 years, 27.17 percent between 51 and 60, 13.12 between 41 and 50 years.

So far, 2,200 of the patients have died in Dhaka division, 972 in Chattoram, 301 in Rajshahi, 386 in Khulna, 177 in Barishal, 206 in Sylhet, 213 in Rangpur, and 97 in Mymensingh.

Across the country, 18,907 people are in isolation and 51,520 are quarantined at present.
