22 injured in Bagerhat clash

14 November 2015, Nirapad News: At least 22 people were injured in a clash between two groups of local Awami League leaders and activists over establishing supremacy at Kalia Bazar in Bagerhat Sadar upazila on Friday. Locals said Sheikh Omar Faruk, publicity secretary of Dema union unit of ruling Awami Leage, had long been at loggerheads with another ruling party activist Nuru Mollah over establishing dominance in the area. A few days back, supporters of Faruk hang a banner in front of the union parishad office, greeting the local UP chairman. On Friday noon, supporters of Nuru Mollah tore off the banner which angered Faruk’s men. Following the incident, supporters of the two groups rushed to the spot with sticks, brick chips and sharp weapons and engaged in a clash. Later, they fought a pitched battle which left at least 22 people, including women, injured, said officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station M Mizanur Rahman. On information, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control. Police also arrested one Afzal Hossain along with a gun from the spot, the OC added. Meanwhile, 16 of the injured were rushed to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital and Khulna Medical College Hospital. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area
