2,275 new Covid-19 patients in 24 hours, 54 new deaths

The officially confirmed coronavirus death tally in Bangladesh went past 2,900 on Sunday – in just 130 days since the country reported its first Covid-19 fatality in mid-March.

Since March 18, 2,928 people have died from the disease and the mortality rate has increased to 1.31 percent.

On Sunday, the health authorities reported 54 new deaths – the highest in the last two weeks, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana told a regular online briefing.

With the detection of 2,275 new Covid-19 patients in 24 hours, Bangladesh’s confirmed cases now stands at 2,23,453.

The daily infection rate has reduced slightly to 22.57 percent while overall 20.10 percent of total 11,11,558 tests have been found positive.

Prof Nasima said 1,792 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours. In total, 1,23,882 people have made recovery so far.

Among the new 54 deaths, 40 were male and 14 were female. “Of the deceased, 78.76 percent were men and 21.24 percent were women,” she added.

The age-based division shows that 39 out of these 54 were aged between 51 and 80 years.

As of Sunday, 1,408 coronavirus patients died in Dhaka, 721 in Chattogram, 174 in Rajshahi, 206 in Khulna, 110 in Barishal, 140 in Sylhet, 108 in Rangpur and 61 in Mymensingh division, Dr Nasima said.

At present, 19,132 people are in isolation while 58,799 are home and institutionally quarantined in the country.

Global coronavirus situation

The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus crossed 16 million on Sunday, with over 644,661 recorded deaths, according to the information accumulated by US-based Johns Hopkins University.

Besides, so far 9,267,601 patients have recovered from coronavirus globally.

Coronavirus cases were first reported in China in December late last year in Wuhan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic on March 11.

It has spread to all corners of the world since then.
