A long traffic jam of 23 kilometers has been created on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, causing an immense suffering of passengers and drivers.

Meanwhile, authorities have stopped collecting toll on the bridge twice since dawn on Saturday as vehicles were stuck on the east and west sides of the Bangabandhu Bridge.

While visiting the area it was found that there has been a traffic jam on the 23 km section of the Dhaka-eastern end of Bangabandhu Bridge highway since Friday night. Such traffic jams have been observed in eastern part Bangabandhu Bridge, Elenga and Rabna Bypass area on the highway.

Talking to drivers, passengers and locals, it is learned that the traffic pressure on the highway has increased due to relaxation of lockdown and home-goers rush for Eid. Various transports including buses and trucks have started operating. As a result, traffic jam is being created in 23 kilometers of Tangail section of the highway. Besides, the transport movement from western part of Bangabandhu Bridge to Sirajganj road is slow.

Several drivers stuck in traffic jam said, “We have to get stuck in traffic jam on the highway from Rabna Bypass in Tangail to eastern part of Bangabandhu Bridge. It seems to have become the rule. We have to suffer a lot in this.”

Yasir Arafat, in-charge of the Elenga Highway police outpost, said the traffic congestion caused by the extension work of the highway in the part of Sirajganj has come to a halt in Tangail.
