24-hr ultimatum for Probir release

18 August 2015, Nirapad News: A group of journalists have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to release journalist Probir Sikdar from a protest rally in city on Monday.

They also warned of tougher movement if the journalist Probir Sikdar is not released unconditionally.

Speakers at the rally, held in front of National Press Club, made the warning. Fractions of Dhaka Union Journalists (DUJ) attended the rally.

The arrestee’s wife Anita Sikdar and two sons Supriya Sikdar and Pulak Sikdar were present at the rally.

Ganajagaran Mancha leaders Kamal Pasha Chowdhury, Bapyaditya Basu, Mahmudul Haque Minsi Bandhan, among others, also joined the protest rally.

The speakers demanded immediate and unconditional release of Probir Sikdar.

Earlier, journalist Probir Sikdar was arrested from his Indira Road office in the capital in a case under Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.

He is set to be produced before Faridpur district court Monday afternoon.

Faridpur Awami League leader Swapan Kumar Paal filed the case on Sunday afternoon.

Hours after filing the case, law enforcers picked up him from the office at night and took him to office of Detective Branch of police.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Muntasirul Islam said Probir Sikdar had been taken DB office for quizzing, But later DB office said that he was taken to Faridpur Kotowali thana.

According to case statement, Probir Sikder in a Facebook status claimed that if he were killed LGRD minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, controversial businessman Moosa bin Shamser and fugitive convicted war criminal Abul Kalam Azad would be responsible.
Faridpur Kotowali Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Mohsinul Kabir said the case was filed on allegation of tarnishing image of a minister by the Facebook status.

Family members said that he wrote the status after failing to file a general diary (GD) with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Thana in city feeling insecure.
