2,617 new cases in 24 hours, another 44 patients died

Bangladesh’s officially confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 269,115 on Thursday after the health authorities announced detection of 2,617 new cases in 24 hours.

During this period, another 44 patients died of Covid-19, pushing the local tally to 3,557, the Directorate General of Health Services said in a press release.

The country reported its first cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18. The government had imposed restriction on movement to curb the transmission. Although the measures appeared to have initially worked, the number of cases shot up with more tests.

People have been largely ignoring health guidelines, raising fears that coronavirus cases will continue to increase.

So far, labs around the country tested 13,15,901 samples – 13,162 in the last 24 hours – and of them, 20.45 percent have turned out to be positive.

Meanwhile, 1,782 patients have recovered, bringing the number of recoveries to 1,54,871. The recovery rate in Bangladesh is 57.5 percent.

The daily infection rate declined to 19.88 percent while the overall fatality rate remained 1.32 percent.

The number of deaths per one million population has increased to 22. The country is seeing 1,632 cases in 7,981 tests per one million population.

Currently, the number of active coronavirus cases in Bangladesh is 110,687.

DGHS said 2,813 of the total victims are men and 744 women. Of the newly deceased, 25 are aged above 60 years and 11 others aged between 51 and 60.

Dhaka division has seen the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths (1,700). It is followed by Chattogram (825), Khulna (278), Rajshahi (229), Sylhet (166), Rangpur (143), Barishal (138) and Mymensingh division (78).

Currently, 18,708 people are in isolation while 52,902 are home and institutionally quarantined in the country.
