28 child-marriages, 84 rapes in January
04 February 2015, Nirapad News: Some 28 cases of underage marriage and 84 cases of rape reportedly occurred in Bangladesh in January 2016, according to the legal aid sub-committee of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad (BMP).
Other than that, as many as 416 women and girls were tortured in past month, said BMP general secretary Maleka Banu.
In a press release, the women’s leader said that so far 84 incidents of rape occurred. Among them, seven girls were allegedly gang raped.
Other than that, 11 women were tried to be raped. As many as nine women were victims of sexual assault and eight of them experienced sexual assaults.
The BMP also informed the media that 16 cases of acid burns and fire burns were reported during the period. Among them, nine victims were killed.
‘About 18 cases of abduction and seven cases of trafficking of women and girls and selling them to brothels were reported.’
‘As many as 70 women and minor girls were killed for various reasons. About 37 women were tortured for dowry and among them, 20 were killed.’
According to the national non-partisan and voluntary organization for women, a score of 13 women experienced stalking at some point in their life. A number of 21 women committed suicide for various harassments and 38 women died mysteriously.
Moreover, 28 children were victims of marriage. As many as 33 women were physically tortured and many others were tortured in different ways.
The Mahila Parishad assembled this data of women harassment after studying 14 daily newspapers.
Moreover, the BMP blamed the deterioration of the law and order situation for the increase of violence against woman within one month.
