3 policemen injured in a clash with fishermen in Sunamganj
08 February 2016, Nirapad News: Three policemen were injured in a clash between policemen and local fishermen at Berberia beel (water body) in Tahirpur upazila on Sunday evening.
Berberia beel falls under Tanguar haor, a unique wetland ecosystem and a protected area.
Police said the clash ensued when the law enforcers challenged some local fishermen who went to Berberia beel allegedly for illegal fishing.
At one point, the fishermen attacked the policemen with home-made sharp weapons, leaving three of the personnel injured.
The injured were admitted to Tahirpur Upazila Health Complex. Officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station Md Shahidullah said Police fired 19 rounds of bullets in the air to bring the situation under control.
Later, police arrested three fishermen – Mainuddin, 35, Rubel Mia, 26, and Maidul, 34 — of Rupnagar village in Dharmapasha upazila in this connection.
Executive magistrate Md Nizam Uddin Ahmed, who has been designated for the conservation of Tanguar haor, said police took the action as the fishermen reportedly went to the area for fishing.
