923 mayor candidates in 234 municipalities, 6 elected uncontested
15 December 2015, Nirapad News: After withdrawal of nomination papers by 162 mayoral candidates today, the last day for withdrawal of candidature, the total mayoral candidates stood at 923 for 234 municipalities.
Joint Secretary to the Election Commission Jesmin Tuli told the news agency.
Of them, 234 from Bangladesh Awami League (AL), 220 from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), 73 from HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party, 20 from JSD, 17 from NPP, 56 from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, 32 from other political parties and 271 are independent candidates.
A total of 2,533 women are vying for the councilor post reserved for women in the local government body. The EC allocated symbols to the candidates after scrutiny and the election is scheduled to be held on December 30 next.
With the allocation of the election symbols, the candidates can now launch election campaigns.
However, six mayoral candidates of municipality election have been elected unopposed, director public relations of the EC secretariat Asaduzzamn Arzu said. Concerned returning officers will announce them elected through public circular soon, he said.
They are: Habibur Rahman Malek of Pirojpur municipality, Mirza Golam Kibria Kabir of Madariganj (Jamalpur) municipality, Sheikh Ahammad Hossain Mirza of Tungipara municipality, Haji Alauddin of Feni municipality, Nizam Uddin Ahammad Chowdhury of Parshuram (Feni) municipality, and Mohammad Ullah of Chatkhil (Noakhali) municipality.
