The election to Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has ended amid reports of violence, deaths, vandalism and irregularities.
Voting in the CCC election, which was postponed 10 months ago due to Covid-19 pandemic, began at 8 am on Wednesday.
Seven mayoral candidates, including Awami League’s Rezaul Karim Chowdhury (Boat) and BNP’s Shahadat Hossain (sheaf of paddy), contested the polls while 172 contested for the post of general councillors and 57 for reserved councillors.
Although BNP candidates brought allegations of irregularities, the ruling Awami League candidates termed the election was held in a festive mood.
The election officials also termed the CCC election fair and peaceful except some stray incidents of violence.
Two persons were killed while some 15 people injured in clashes in Pahartali area in the port city during voting this morning.
The deceased are Nizam Uddin Munna, said to be a supporter of Awami League rebel councillor candidate Saber Ahmed, while Alauddin, son of Sultan Mia of Cumilla district.
