15 March 2015, Nirapad News: Prime Minister’s Political Adviser H T Imam today strongly criticized the role of police during the murder of blogger and writer Abhijit Roy on the Dhaka University campus.
“The murder of Abhijit Roy in presence of law enforcers is not acceptable. I know some incidents for which policemen were asked to come to spot but they did not appear. Those who did not come, they are “black sheep”. Such types of members of law enforcement agency should be identified and punished,” he said.
Imam was addressing a seminar on “Contribution of Police to the War of Liberation and the Role of Police in Upholding Democracy and Human Rights” organised by a non-government social organisation “Journey” at Dhaka University Senate Bhaban.
Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Adviser Dr Mashiur Rahman, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah, noted historian Professor Syed Anwar Hossian and Mahbub Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram also spoke at the seminar.
The PM’s political affairs adviser said noted writer Professor Humayun Azad was brutally killed in a planned way. “Abhijit would not have been murdered, had the case regarding Humayun Azad been investigated properly and criminals were punished,” he said.
He urged the law enforcers to complete investigation of such cases to check recurrence of murders.
Imam said many acts of sabotage took place in 2013 like attacks on the policemen and police stations, violence in Gaibandha, Nandigram, Kansat and Satkhira.
“Such cases should be investigated properly to punish the offenders to stop their recurrence, he added.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said they have already brought key points of the city including diplomatic zones under closed circuit cameras to detect crimes.
He said DU Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and Shahbagh intersection and Central Shaheed Minar areas will be brought under CC camera coverage within one month.
The DMP chief said they have already unearthed all recent incidents of sabotage in Dhaka city and arrested the offenders.
“For this reason, we have been able to control the incidents of sabotage in the capital,” he added.
