Amu for producing quality honey for export
29 February 2015, Nirapad News: Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu today said Bangladesh is trying to get European Union’s (EU) permission for exporting honey to the European market.
“Bangladesh is trying to get EU’s permission for exporting of honey to European market,” he said while speaking at the opening ceremony of a 3-day honey fair at Krishibid Institution of Khamar Bari here.
Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Anwar Faruk chaired the session while agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury and Abdul Mannan, MP attended it as special guest.
Amu said the country produces 4000 tons of honey annually but it is possible to produce one lakh tons of honey annually if sophisticated technology is used and the number of bees is increased.
Laying emphasis on producing quality honey, the industries minister said most modern and environment-friendly technology will have to be used in collection of honey and along with it packaging system will have to be modernized. Bee farmers will have to be given necessary training and technological assistance for increasing the production of honey, he added.
Matia Chowdhury said awareness will have to be created about the use and production of honey. She said honey harvesting will be increased if the people become aware about the nutritional contents of honey.
A total of 34 honey harvesters are participating in the fair.
