Anamul to replace Shakib for rest of Zimbabwe series
09 November 2015, Nirapad News: Top order batsman Anamul Haque will replace Shakib Al Hasan, who is leaving for the US to join his pregnant wife, in the ODI squad for the rest of the series against Zimbabwe.
Bangladesh Cricket Board on Sunday granted Shakib the urgent leave and announced Anamul’s inclusion in the team.
Team Manager Khaled Mahmud told reporters, “Shakib is leaving due to an emergency. His flight takes off at 9pm tonight (Sunday).”
Though the BCB had granted him leave earlier, Shakib returned home from the US on Oct 31 to join the squad for the Zimbabwe series.
The ace all-rounder said then that his wife Umme Ahmed Shishir had encouraged him to come and play for the country.
He, however, had also kept the board notified about the possibility of a sudden departure to join Shishir for the birth of their first child.
The vice-captain had played a major role in Bangladesh’s 145-run victory in the first ODI on Saturday by taking five wickets for 47 runs.
It was his first five-wicket haul in the ODIs.
Anamul was called up for the 18-member preliminary squad but did not make the cut in the final 14.
Explaining his selection to replace an all-rounder, Chief Selector Faruk Ahmed said: “An all-rounder like Shakib can never be replaced. We felt that we had options regarding bowlers. That’s why we included a batsman.”
The Tigers now lead the three-match ODI series 1-0. The second match is scheduled for Monday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
Anamul played for Bangladesh in the last World Cup against Scotland. He had gone off with a shoulder injury while fielding during the match.
After missing the series against Pakistan and India, he recently recovered after undergoing surgery.
He was in the squad in the series against South Africa, but did not play any match.
The top-order batsman has played 30 one-dayers until now; and has three centuries and as many fifties with an average of 35.18.?
