Arrest spree despite polls schedule, PM’s assurance: BNP
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday alleged that law enforcers are arresting his party leaders who have brighter prospect of success in the 11th parliamentary elections.
“We’re observing with serious concern and anger that the tendency of arresting opposition leaders and activists in false and fictitious cases and denying them bail has marked a sharp rise even after the announcement of the election schedule and the prime minister’s assurance (of stopping such arrest),” he said.
In a statement, reports UNB, the BNP leader further said, “Especially the opposition candidates who have the brighter prospect to come out successful in the upcoming election are being arrested and denied bail.”
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, during the talks with leaders of the opposition coalition of Jatiya Oikya Front, asked them to submit a list of the cases that the opposition leaders called fictitious. Two such lists were shared with the government later.
He also alleged that the lower court is delaying the hearing on bail petitions of the prospective BNP candidates with a political motive.
Fakhrul said the arrest and harassment of their leaders and activities are on so that the ruling party can make political gains.
He deplored that election commission is not creating a level-playing field even after the announcement of the election schedule.
The BNP leader said their some candidates are threatened over phone in the name of different agencies while toll money is demanded from some others, destroying the election atmosphere. “These incidents have manifested that the government and the election commission are not sincere about holding a free, fair, neutral and inclusive election.”
He said their party chairperson Khaleda Zia, ex-whip Munirul Haque Chowdhury, BNP joint secretaries general Aslam Chowdhury, Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Khaleda’s special assistant Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and Jubo Dal general secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku and many other leaders have been kept in jail denying them bail in different cases.
Fakhrul demanded the government immediately release Khaleda and her other party leaders for ensuring a fair election atmosphere.
