Arrest warrant against BNP’s Harris Chowdhury and BNP Mayors
21 December 2014, Nirapad News : Arrest warrants have been issued against 11 accused by a Habiganj court, including Khaleda Zia’s former political adviser Harris Chowdhury and Sylhet Mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury in the case over the murder of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria.
Investigation officer, Sylhet’s ASP Meherun Nesa Parul, submitted a supplementary charge-sheet to the court on Sunday and Habiganj’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Rashid Ahmed Miron accepted it and issued arrest of the 11, including Sylhet mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury and Habiganj mayor Ariful Haq Chowdhury, whose names were added in the supplementary charge-sheet.
Thirty five people, including Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, BNP General Secretary Golam Kibria Gaus, were made accused in the charge sheet of the murder case. Of the accused, eight are on bail while several are in jail.
The same court turned down the bail petition for Lutfuzzaman Babar while issuing the warrant.
Kibria was assassinated on January 27, 2005 in a grenade attack in Habiganj. Later, Sylhet district Awami League (AL) leader Advocate Abdul Mazid Khan filed a murder case in this connection. Rafiqul Islam of CID, who has been assigned to lead an additional probe in the case, has identified at least 11 Huji operatives, including Mufti Hannan, to be involved in the attack. The ten others are former deputy minister and BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu’s brother Moulana Tajuddin, Mizan, Mithu, Abu Zandal, Hannan’s younger brother Mohibullah Ovi, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul, Naim Ahmed Arif alias Limu, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hye and Ahsanullah Kajal. Of the 11, Kajal died in India in 2006, while Shafiqur, Hye and Tajuddin are still at large and the rest are behind bars.
Harris Chowdhury is already an accused in the Aug 21, 2004, grenade attack and Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases. He is on the run as the cases are in progress. Central BNP leader Ariful Haq is also a member of the party’s Sylhet metropolitan unit convenor committee. He was elected mayor last year. Gaus is the general secretary of the BNP’s Habiganj district unit. He is serving as Habiganj mayor for a 2nd consecutive term.
