Auto-rickshaw drivers’ strike in the city underway
13 March 2016, Nirapad News: A 24-hour strike, enforced by the drivers of CNG-run auto-rickshaws, is underway in city from Sunday morning (March 13) to realize their seven-point demands, including release of all imprisoned auto-rickshaw drivers.
CNG-run Auto-Rickshaw Drivers’ Union called the strike from 6:00am on Sunday after holding a meeting at their office at Dhalpur, Jatrabari on Saturday (March 12).
Dhaka District Four-Star Auto-CNG Driver Union president Rafiqul Islam told banglanews they were observing the strike demanding stopping vehicle dumping and jail-fine, releasing of all imprisoned auto-rickshaw drivers, distributing 5,000 CNG-run auto-rickshaws among drivers for improved services, halting no-parking cases till sufficient arrangement of parking lot, reducing daily deposit to Tk 600 from Tk 900 and issuing letter/ID cards for drivers as per labor law.
Meanwhile, Dhaka metropolitan CNG-run Auto-Rickshaw business association general secretary Siddiqur Rahman said they did not know about strike.
“A few of our CNG-run auto-rickshaws were vandalized after the drivers went out with their vehicles. After that, we learnt about the strike,” he added.
