Avijit murder evidence handed over to FBI
12 March 2015, Nirapad News: Detective Branch (DB) of police has handed over the evidence of writer-blogger Avijit Roy murder to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States for DNA test.
A total of 13 evidence including two machetes, a blood-stained shirt and a school bag have been given to the US investigation agency FBI on Tuesday night, DB joint commissioner Monirul Islam told on Wednesday. “The evidence would be tested at the FBI laboratory,” said the DB official.
A Dhaka court on Tuesday allowed two petitions by police detectives seeking permission to hand over evidence, seized materials and samples collected from Dhaka Medical College to the FBI team.
The court passed the orders in response to two petitions submitted by DB Inspector Fazlur Rahman, who is also the investigation officer of the case.
A US citizen and bio-engineer by profession, Avijit was hacked to death and his wife Bonya critically injured when miscreants attacked them machetes on February 26 on their way back home from the Amar Ekushey Book Fair.
The following day, the US, in a statement, said Washington will assist the investigation into the gruesome killing, if the Bangladesh government seeks.
The FBI team has been assisting the Bangladeshi investigators since March 5.
