Bangladesh Bank started payment on Sonali Bank’s inland bill purchase
5 March 2015, Nirapad News: Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Thursday started payments of the Sonali Bank’s inland bill purchase (IBP) which remained unsettled for months.
The central bank on Thursday paid 1 lakh and 12 thousand dollars to Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) against the pending IBPs, which the state-owned bank was unable to settle.
When contacted, General Manager at the Governor Secretariat of BB AFM Asaduzzaman confirmed the press that the central bank started the pending IBP payment by debiting the Sonali’s foreign currency accounts. He said BB would also pay the money to other banks in phases to settle Sonali’s IBPs with all other banks.
Earlier, BB governor Dr Atiur Rahman asked Sonali Bank to settle the IBP with the banks concerned, otherwise the central bank would take measures to settle issue.
Many banks those purchased IBP from Sonali Bank were not getting their payments from Sonali Bank after the Hallmark scam in which several crores of Taka were misappropriated through IBPs.
