Bangladesh eyes 4.5m tones fish output by 2020-2021
01 February 2015, Nirapad News: A total of 4.55 million tonnes (MT) fish is likely to be produced in the country by the fiscal year (FY) 2020-2021to fulfill the demand for fish by the increasing population.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Sayedul Haque disclosed this in the Jatiya Sangsad, while replying to a question from Jatiya Party member Begum Salma Islam Sunday. He said in the fiscal year 2015-2016 the country has a demand for 4.05 million tonnes fish as per 60 gram daily per capital intake of fish and this requirement would be 4.52 million tones in the FY 2020-2021, according t reports by BSS and UNB. He informed the House that fish production was 3.68 million tonnes in the FY 2014-2015. Fish production marks rapid growth This marked a 6.23 per cent annual growth on average over the last five years, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque said. The contribution of fishing sector to the country’s GDP is 3.69 per cent, he said replying to a starred question In reply to another question from Jasod MP Lutfa Taher, the minister said Bangladesh has become the 4th largest inland freshwater fish producer.
