Bangladesh to receive prestigious WIP award
22 March 2015, Nirapad News: Bangladesh has been selected for the Women in Parliaments Global Forum (WIP) as a pioneering country in reducing gender discrimination, said an official on Saturday.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam left for Ethiopia Saturday night on a three-day visit to receive the WIP award on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday.
Shahriar who is leading a three-member delegation will attend the Annual Summit 2015. The WIP Summit 2015 will be held at the Nelson Mandela Hall in the Headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa.
The prestigious WIP Awards are presented to those countries, which are recognized for their political empowerment of women, and to countries that show regional leadership in closing the gender gap in politics.
The awards are based on the rankings of the World Economic Forum’s ‘Global Gender Gap Report’, which are compiled in collaboration with the Harvard University and University of California, Berkeley.
International institutions, including the European Union, OECD, United Nations and the World Bank, are integral part of the WIP Annual Summit 2015, and will provide Working Sessions.
The State Minister is scheduled to return home on Thursday morning.
