‘BCL men’ assault in Rokeya University extortion
13 August 2015, Nirapad News: The executive engineer of Begum Rokeya University was assaulted allegedly by a group of activists of the university unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) over extortion on the campus on Wednesday.
On the contrary, the university unit of the ruling party’s student wing gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the university authorities for removing the executive engineer for his ‘derogatory remark’ about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Jahangir Alam, executive engineer of the university, said 10-12 leaders and activists of the university unit Chhatra League led by its general secretary Mostofa Mahmud Hasan entered his office room and demanded 10 percent toll for all university works from him.
As he refused to meet the demand, they physically assaulted him.
He submitted a written complaint to the university’s vice-chancellor in this regard.
University unit BCL general secretary Mostofa Mahmud Hasan ,however, said that they went to the office of the executive engineer to talk about observing the anniversary of martyrdom of Bangabandhu.
At one stage of talk, executive engineer Jahangir Alam made a derogatory comment about Bangabandhu, said Mostofa.
He denied the allegation of demanding 10 percent toll for all university works from the engineer and assaulting him.
Hasan also threatened to launch an agitation program on the campus if their demand for removal of the executive engineer from the university was kept unmet.
Shofiqul Islam, in-charge of the university police outpost, said additional police personnel have been deployed on the campus to avert any untoward incident.
