Begum Rokeya Day being marked
09 December 2015, Nirapad News: The 135th birth and 83rd death anniversaries of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, the pioneer of women renaissance in the subcontinent, is being marked in a befitting manner in the capital and elsewhere across the country on Wednesday.
The programmes of the day also include milad mahfil, floral wreath placing at her portraits, discussions on her life and deeds, cultural functions and ceremony for distribution of “Begum Rokeya Award -2015”.
Besides, the Rangpur district administration, in association with Mithapukur upazila administration, has chalked out a three-day programmes at the birthplace of Begum Rokeya, to observe the Rokeya Day-2015.
The programmes include milad mahfil, open discussion on Begum Rokeya, blood donation and blood group tests, launching of a three-day traditional “Rokeya Fair” followed by a colourful cultural function, competitions on drawing, recitation of the poems written by Begum Rokeya and essay writing on her and colorful cultural evening with participations of artists from different cultural organizations.
Begum Rokeya was born in village Pairaband on December 9 in 1880 and died on the same day in 1932 in Kolkata.
She had struggled for establishing women rights, freedom, education, empowerment, economic emancipation and movement that created a vigorous women renaissance in the then highly conservative and British-ruled colonial society.
On the occasion, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today gave separate messages paying their rich tributes to the memory of Rokeya.
The Prime Minister is set distribute the Begum Rokeya Award -2015 among the winners at a program in city’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium this morning, with State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki in the chair.
Freedom fighter Dr Thaibun Nahar Rashid and Fashion Designer Bibi Russel were nominated for the award.
