Blockade steps into 30th day
04 February 2015, Nirapad News: The BNP-led 20-party alliance, entered the 30th day on Wednesday, alongside the 108-hour nationwide hartal, sponsored by the alliance as part of its movement for restoring democracy and people’s voting right.
While its 72-hour nationwide hartal was scheduled to end at 6.00am Wednesday, the alliance on Tuesday extended it by 36 hours till 6.00pm Thursday.
In a statement, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, announced the extended shutdown programme.
A large number of law enforcers remained deployed in different parts of the capital to fend off any trouble.
At least 12 people were killed and 51 others injured in widespread violence across the country on the 29th day of the blockade on Tuesday, alongside its third day of the nationwide hartal.
Incidents of violence like petrol bomb attack, vehicle torching, crude bomb blast and arrest of pickets and 20-party alliance activists were reported from different parts of the country, including the capital, on the 29th day of the blockade and 3rd day of the Hartal.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia called the indefinite blockade from January 6 as the government did not allow her party and its allies to hold protest rallies in the capital on January 5.
