BNP wants judicial probe in Tonu murder

28 March 2016, Nirapad News: The BNP has demanded a judicial inquiry into the murder of Comilla Victoria Government College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.

The body of the 19-year old theatre activist, with her head smashed, was found in a bush near a culvert inside the Comilla Cantonment on the night of Mar 20.

Police said crime scene investigations pointed to possible rape before murder.

None of the killers have been identified or picked up eight days after the murder.

The incident has created a firestorm in social media and sparked protests and demonstrations across Bangladesh.

The BNP’s women front staged a human-chain protest on Monday at the capital over the murder.

“The government should immediately form a committee led by a retired Supreme Court judge,” BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman said at the demonstration.

Noman came up with a statistics that every day five women die in Bangladesh due to rape. He, however, did not cite where it was from.

“Everybody understands Tonu was murdered. She was a theatre activist and was killed in the Comilla Cantonment,” said the BNP leader.

He said that justice would have been prompt if it was an army officer’s daughter. “That’s why there’s an attempt to cover up her rape and murder.
