BR to collect 250 passenger carriages
08 November 2015, Nirapad News: Bangladesh Railway (BR) is going to collect 250 passenger carriages to offer better services to the commuters.
To this end, the BR has taken a project involving Taka 1,374 crore as part of its modernization and replacement of old passenger carriages, said an official of the planning ministry.
He said the project would be implemented under the financing of Asian Development Bank (ADB).
ADB has agreed to provide US$ 200 million credit under the agreement of Railway Rolling Stock Project.
The official said the project is now awaiting the final approval of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council. The BR would implement the project by June, 2019.
According to the Development Project Proforma (DPP), 200 carriages would be collected for meter gauge rail movement while 50 carriages for broad gauge rail. In addition, maintenance and capital spare parts would also be collected.
The official said the government in the Seventh Five Year Plan (SFYP) has set goal to collect 1120 new passenger carriages for the BR.
At present, the BR has a total of 1165 meter gauge passenger carriages in its fleet of which 456 coaches are in operation over 35 years while age of 135 coaches is between 31-34 years. But, as per the mechanical code, economic life of a passenger carriage is 35 years. In this context, the 456 coaches have already expired while 135 coaches are running with different problems.
Besides, the BR’s broad gauge fleet has a total of 324 passenger carriages, of which 78 coaches have already completed their operating lifecycle.
Commenting on the project, the planning commission said collection of 250 passenger carriages would increase the transportation capability of Bangladesh Railway.
