British police hunt female who persuades men to have online sex and then blackmails them.
Nirapad News : Police are hunting an internet femme fatale who persuades men to have online sex and then blackmails them.
Detectives fear the woman – who calls herself Cathy Wong – may have stung scores of hapless victims for as much as £3,000 a time.
Three men – all students living in the same area – have already come forward telling the same story although officers fear the scam could be worldwide and run by criminal gangs.
The flirtatious woman befriends her victims on Facebook and asks them to Skype her.
She then entices them into performing an indecent act, which she secretly records on video without their knowledge.
When they next make contact with her she claims her grandmother is ill and desperately needs money.
She demands £3,000 via money transfer … and when the men refuse she threatens to upload their video onto YouTube.
Detectives in York have issued an urgent warning about the woman and are warning internet users, particularly students, to be on their guard.
Detective Sergeant Rebecca Dyer of York CID, said: “This scam is causing considerable distress to the victims and I urge anyone who uses any kind of social networking site to be very wary of what they are getting into.
“I am concerned that there are other victims of this scam who are too embarrassed to come forward about what has happened. I urge them to please get in touch with the police.
“Your information will be dealt with in the strictest confidence and with sensitivity. Please do not suffer in silence.”
