19 February 2015, Nirapad News: The Central Shaheed Minar and its surrounding areas will go under a security blanket on February 21 when the nation will celebrate the International Mother Language Day and Amar Ekushey.

Considering the ongoing political instability, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police will take foolproof security measures for the smooth observance of the day, said the RAB Director General and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner in separate briefings in the city on Thursday.

At a press briefing at the Central Shaheed Minar, RAB DG Benazir Ahmed said the elite force along with other law enforcement agencies has laid out the security arrangements considering the country’s latest political situation.

Replying to a query, he said they do not apprehend any subversive act on February 21. “We have no such information as of now. We’re trying to earn people’s trust.”

Observing that many foreign guests, including Paschimbanga Chief Minster Mamata Banerjee, along with the President, the Prime Minister and VVIPs will be there at the Shaheed Minar to pay their tributes to the martyrs, the RAB chief hoped that the BNP-led 20-party alliance will help maintain the country’s image. “We hope that the good sense will prevail upon them.”

Senior RAB officials were present at the press briefing.

Earlier, Benazir Ahmed inspected the RAB security arrangements at the Central Shaheed Minar.

At another press briefing at the DMP Media Centre, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said the police will take stringent security measures in and around the Central Shaheed Minar on February 21.

Replying to a question, he said they have no knowledge whether BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will arrive at the Shaheed Minar to pay her tributes there. “But we hope she’ll. If she comes she’ll get the highest security as every year.”
