Chhatra League attacks newspaper office
Jhenaidah, 08 February 2015, Nirapad News: Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League vandalized the office of a local newspaper the Daily Nabachitra at Kaliganj in Jhenaidah yesterday. The employees of the newspaper said, a group of Chhatra League numbering 40 to 50 led by its Kaliganj unit president Israil Hossain had swooped on the office of the daily around 11:30am.
The attackers locked up the main gate of the newspaper office saying they would see the chief editor of the newspaper Shahidul Islam why enough story about the Chhatra League was not printed. The attackers had vandalized furniture other equipment of the newspaper and left the scene issuing threats to kill its chief editor.
Nabachitra chief editor Shahidul Islam said the attackers were activists of the ruling party and supporters of local lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar. When contacted, Kaliganj unit Chhatra League president Israil Hossain denied involvement of any Chhatra League activists with the incident.
Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain said the police was investigating into the incident.
Kaliganj upazila nirbahi officer Manwar Hossain Mollah said, he had visited the newspaper office immediate after the attack.
Legal steps would be taken against the persons involved.
Jhenaidah press club in an emergency meeting in the afternoon condemned the attack on the newspaper office. The journalists demanded exemplary punishments to the attackers.
