Chittagong municipality polls start peacefully
30 December 2015, Nirapad News: Voting at polling centres in 10 Municipalities of Chittagong port city begun this morning amid tight security.
Despite severe cold, long queues of voters including women and children were seen outside the polling stations to exercise their franchise at many
District election office sources said the voters are casting their votes in a peaceful atmosphere and they did not receive news of any untoward incident till filling of this report at 8.50 am today.
Apart from police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were seen patrolling in and around important polling centers.
Shortly after casting votes at their respective municipalities, Awami League nominated Mayor candidate for Patiya, Prof Harunur Rashid and BNP Nominated candidate for Banskhali Kamrul Islam Hossaini expressed their hope over their respective victory and said that they would accept the result whatever it may be.
Abdul Baten, regional election officer of Chittagong region, told BSS that voting has started peacefully in Chittagong and they did not receive news of any untoward incident.
A total of 34 mayoral candidates, 415 ward councilors including 77 female (reserved) councilors are now in the race for 10 municipalities under Chittagong district.
