Chumki seeks 33 per cent participation of women in local body polls
04 November 2015,Nirapad News: State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki today urged the political parties to ensure 33 per cent participation of women in upcoming local government polls.
“Commitment of political parties is required for empowerment of women. The ruling Awami League is committed in this regard,” she said speaking at a national seminar on empowerment of women at CIRDAP auditorium here.
Steps Towards Development organized the seminar on ‘Political Empowerment of Women: Gender Sensitive Governance and Services’ with its Executive Director Ranjan Karmakar in the chair.
Members of Parliament Fazilatun Nesa Indira, Chhobi Biswas, Sagufta Ysmin Emily, Zebunnesa Afroze Hiron, poet Kazi Rosy, Mosammat Selina Jahan Lita, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad General Secretary Dr. Maleka Banu, Prip Trust Executive Director Arama Dutta and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Senior Programme Officer Sabina Yasmin Lubna took part in the discussion while Steps Towards Development Director Rekha Saha presented a study paper.
Referring to killing of freethinkers in the country, the state minister said the killers are against empowerment of women.
Political commitment is required to face this situation, she added.
The present government is working for empowerment of women facing this challenge, Chumki said.
She said Bangladesh would never become a developed country without political and economic empowerment of women.
The speakers in the seminar stressed the need for creating a gender sensitive environment in the country for economic and political empowerment of women.
