City dwellers suffer for sudden rain
13 October 2015, Nirapad News: A sudden rain on Monday morning submerged some areas of the capital, inflicting immense sufferings on commuters.
Apart from waterlogging, the moderate rain also caused traffic gridlocks in some parts of the city, including Mirpur Road, Firmgate and Shahbagh areas, as the submerged roads slowed down vehicular movement.
The Met Office recorded 17 milimetres of rain in three hours from 12 pm to 3 pm and forecast showers at most places of Dhaka over the next two days.
The rain started at 11 am and continued till 1 pm.
Roads and lanes in some parts of Rampura, Moghbazar, Shantinagar, Shahjahanpur, Malibagh and Khilgaon were inundated during the rain due to the poor drainage system.
School students and their guardians had to face trouble failing to get transports after the school hours. Auto-rickshaw drivers and rickshaw-pullers charged excessive fares from the passengers in absence of sufficient transports on the roads.
Commuters faced unbearable miseries while travelling through the roads connecting Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar Eskaton, Dilu Road, Siddeswari, Shatrasta and Rampura areas as the roads that developed deep potholes due to the construction work of Moghbazar-Mouchak flyover went under water, putting them at risk of accidents.
Many people were seen wading through filthy water. Stinks from drains mixed with the stagnant water added to the woes of the pedestrians.
A Met Office bulletin on Monday said light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Rangpur and Barisal divisions and at one or two places over Khulna division with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over Chittagong division in the next 24 hours till 6 pm tomorrow (Tuesday).
