Community radio mainstreaming marginalized: Inu

15 Septembar 2015, Nirapad News: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu today termed Community Radio as the medium to mainstream the marginalized population.

`Mass media is the greatest weapon to enable and equip the marginalized people with the power of information’, said the minister.

Hasanul Haq Inu was speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day international seminar titled ‘ Community Media Sustainability: Policies and Funding’ at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, a press statement issued here today said.

`The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued licenses to 32 community radios and 15 of them are already in operation across the country. Many of them operate along the coastline, where vulnerability is still to be minimized’, Hasanul Haq Inu told the seminar chaired by UNESCO Communication and Information Sector (CI) Section Chief Mirta LorenOo and attended by over 80 delegates from other countries.

`Community radio is the outcome of our initiative to give `Voice to the Voiceless’- part of an all out effort to mainstreaming the marginalized’, said Inu.

He also emphasized on both `Political’ and `Community’ commitments for sustainability of the community media in Bangladesh and the world.

Strong political and community commitments will lead to proper policy and funding for community media, the minister said.

Information minister added that mass media in Bangladesh is booming during the leadership of present government as the country takes on a transition towards democracy from miniaturization and religious-communal fundamentalism of the past.

`In an ICT-made flat-world, we believe in 3 C’s- Connect, Collaborate and Compete, in order to thrive in every sector’, said the minister.

Inu lauded the UNESCO initiatives for the seminar saying, `Community media is a strong tool to make the world a better place- to lead us- to equality, justice, and honor for all.’

Bangladesh Ambassador in Paris M Shahidul Islam, CEO of Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) A H M Bazlur Rahman, Country Director of Article 19 Bangladesh Tahmina Rahman, member of Bangladesh Internet Governance Forum (BIGF) Afroza Haq Rina and First Secretary of Bangladesh Embassy in Paris Farhana Ahmed Chowdhury attended the sessions as members of Bangladesh delegation.
