Community radios can help achieve SDGs: Inu
10 December 2015, Nirapad News: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Wednesday said community radios have huge potential to make people aware of gender disparity, child marriage, health, education and technology.
There are only 32 community radios in Bangladesh which are not enough to bring sustainable changes in communities, he said while addressing a discussion on ‘Community Radio’s Role to Implement SDG’s and 7th Five-year Plan’.
Bangladesh Community Radio Association (BCRA) organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club.
The Information Minister said community radios must be financially and technologically sustainable to play significant role in achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
He said the government will shortly modify policies to make the community radios financially strong and sustainable.
Community radios can bring notable changes in the marginalised communities by ensuring free flow of information related to their rights to maternal and child health, education and gender equality.
Bangladesh National Museum Board of Trustees Chairman M Azizur Rahman, Dhaka University teacher Prof SM Shamim Reza, Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communications (BNNRC) chief executive AHM Bazlur Rahman also spoke at the programme.
