Cox’s Bazar Development Authority bill passed

27 February 2015, Nirapad News: The Parliament has passed Cox’s Bazar Development Authority Bill-2016 in a bid to ensure development in Cox’s Bazar under a master plan.

The district attracts a good number of tourists every year as it has the largest sea beach in the world.

After approval by the President, regulations will be formulated and then will start implementation of the plan.

Housing and Public Work minister Mosharraf Hossain placed the bill in the parliament session on Thursday (February 25). Later, it was passed by a voice vote.

Besides, another proposal of opposition party, including Jatiya Party MP M Fakhrul Imam and independent MP Dr Rustam Ali, on sending the bill for public opinion and scrutiny committee, has been rejected by voice vote.

According to the bill, as the longest sea beach and natural beauty, Cox’s Bazar has already achieved popularity at home and abroad.

So, it is needed to develop the town and enhance the living standards of its dwellers in a bid to make it a modern tourist city.

After enactment of the law, a 15-member Cox’s Bazar development authority comprising a female member, the deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and mayor of Cox’s Bazar and 11 non-permanent members will be formed.

The government will appoint its chairman and three permanent members.

On July 6 last year, the cabinet had approved the draft of Cox’s Bazar Development Authority Bill-2015.

After the approval, cabinet secretary Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said that Cox’s Bazar has immense importance and possibilities of being a city for tourism. The unplanned urbanization has weakened its attraction.

In this situation, the government has taken initiatives to establish an authority for planned urbanization.

Cox’s Bazar Development Authority will work as of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha and Chittagong Unnayan Kartripakkha, he secretary added.

According to him, any sort of development and infrastructural work will need permission from the newly formed authority.
