Ctg lawyers agree to continue court activities during hartal
3 March 2015, Nirapad News: The Chittagong District Bar Association (CDBA) on Tuesday decided to participate in court activities during hartal days.
CDBA in a joint meeting with the lawyers of different political parties took the decision that buried a 26-year old resolution preventing the lawyers from attending courts during hartal days.
According to court sources, during the autocratic rule of Ershad in 1989, Chittagong court lawyers decided not to participate in court activities during hartal and the convention was followed till Tuesday.
General Secretary of CDBA Advocate Enamul Hoque said all lawyers of the court in Tuesday’s meeting agreed to continue court activities from 2pm to 5pm during hartal days.
“The lawyers would take part in court activities from 2pm on Wednesday and the decision would remain effective in future during hartal , called by any political party”, he added.
Earlier, Chittagong court judges took an initiative to conduct court activities during continuous hartal of the BNP-led 20-party alliance but judges had to leave the courtrooms due to disruptions by pro-BNP-Jamaat lawyers.
As the 20-party alliance has been enforcing indefinite blockade and continuous shutdowns since January 5, works in the Chittagong judiciary were badly hit with lawyers not turning up during shutdowns. Besides, judges could also not sit in courts during hartal days due to protest of the pro-BNP-Jamaat lawyers, resulting in a huge backlog of pending cases.
In such situations, lawyers in the port city met and decided to attend courts. Presided over CDBA president Advocate Mojibul Hoque, This meeting took the decision to take part in court activities after 2pm during hartal days.
