Death toll rises to 70 in Padma launch capsize

More bodies of deceased are seen while the death toll rose to 65 with the recovery of 24 more bodies early Monday.

23 February 2015, Nirapad News: The death toll from the Sunday’s launch capsize in the Padma River in Shibalaya upazila rose to 70 with the recovery of 24 more bodies early Monday. Till Sunday night, 46 bodies were recovered as the launch with over a hundred passengers on board sank in the Padma River.

The local administration already handed over 43 bodies to their family members. The deceased included 19 men, 14 women and 10 children, hailing from different areas of Rajbari and Kushtia districts.

Meanwhile, salvage vessel ‘Rustom’, which reached the capsize spot on Sunday night, managed to pull the sunken vessel to the shore at around 4 am.

The launch, ‘MV Mostafa’, sank in the mid-river around 11:45 am after it was hit by a fertilizer-laden cargo vessel, ‘Nargis-1’, while it was heading towards Daulatdia ferry ghat from Paturia ghat, said Enamul Haque, an official at Aricha River Port.

Deputy Commissioner of the district Rashida Ferdous said an amount of Tk 20,000 will be given to each family of the victims on behalf of the district administration.
