Diabetes causes 12 pc of blindness
17 Septembar 2015, Nirapad News: Speakers at a workshop today said the fourth biggest deadliest disease diabetes causes 12 per cent of blindness in the country.
“Twelve per cent of blindness is caused by diabetes and most of the patients are not aware of it…It is the duty of all doctors of the diabetes patients to make them aware of the blindness and how they can take care and prevent it, ” said Professor of National Institute of Opthalmology and Hospital (NIOH) Dr Dipak Nag.
He was speaking at the workshop titled, ‘Dissemination Summit and Strategic Workshop on Diabetic Retinopathy Screening’.
The program jointly organised by NIOH and Helen Keller International (HKI) at Krishibid Institute of Bangladesh in city’s Farmgate area aims to discuss the emergence of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) as a public health concern at national level.
As per International Diabetic Foundation (IDF), diabetes prevalence in Bangladesh would reach 12 Million by 2035 posing a big challenge to health system.
The DR — damage to the blood vessels in the retina– is one of the dire consequences of diabetes affecting the vision of the individual, said the speakers adding, “If not treated timely, DR may lead to irreversible blindness.”
NIOH and HKi representatives and other doctors of ophthalmology and diabetes were present.
