Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Thursday said the sufferings of justice seekers will go down with the launching of digital summons as witnesses of criminal cases would receive short message service (SMS) on their mobile phones as reminder of the hearing dates.

“This would certainly save time and money of the witnesses and the state as well, apart from lessening the sufferings of the justice-seekers. It would also ensure transparency and accountability in the judiciary,” he said, reports BSS.

The law minister was speaking while launching the programme to inform the witnesses about the hearing dates through SMS, apart from the existing process of issuing summons, at the secretariat.

The system was launched at Comilla and Narsingdi under a pilot programme.

Presided over by Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar, Thursday’s launching ceremony was addressed by Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Md Afzal Hossain, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division Secretary Md Moinul Kabir, Cumilla District and Sessions Judge Md Atabullah, Narsingdi District and Sessions Judge Mostak Ahmed and Teletalk Bangladesh Limited Managing Director Md Sahab Uddin, among others.

Law Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar earlier said that apart from the existing process of issuing summons, the new system would ensure appearance of the witness before the court in the quickest possible time and at less expense.
