DMP identifies 150 IDs for instigating student movement

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched stringent legal procedure against 150 profiles for their alleged involvement in social media, especially Facebook to create anarchy in recent student’s movement.

“We have so far filed six cases under ICT Act against over 50 profiles for their direct involvement in instigating students by spreading propagandas and rumors using facebook, twitter and online portals,” DMP’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cyber Crime Division Md Alimuzzaman told BSS today.

Revealing that the law enforcers have already arrested 11 persons for direct involvement of prompting students, he said: “Scrutinizing over 1,500 profiles of different social media, we’ve found over 150 accounts as vibrant and some 80 to 90 has appeared as highly vibrant.”

The Cyber Crime unit itself filed two cases with Ramna Model Thana, accusing 46 profiles under ICT Act and arrested four persons including Zoom Bangla.Com owner Yusuf Chowdhury and Moderator of Tareque Zia Cyber Force Md Waliullah, added Alimuzzaman.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has filed a case against model Nawshaba Ahmed with Uttara West Police Station under ICT Act and she faced remand for several days in two terms.

Besides, DMP’s Detective Branch (DB) filed another case with Ramna Thana accusing freelance photographer and owner of Drik Gallery Shahidul Alam who is also now at police custody.

The Rupnagar Police also arrested another social media activist Shahida Akhter Ruma and lodged a case against her under same law.

On the other hand, Dhanmondi Police has filed another case against a person who was very active in various social media in instigating students against the government.

Talking to BSS, DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah, said: “We have already started crackdown on the cyber criminals after identifying them and gradually they will be netted.”

Terming the move as “difficult war” he said: “it’s a new move for us as the social media is being run with different policies from abroad while the domain of online portals are hosted abroad” .
