DNCC lacks earthquake preparation
18 January 2016, Nirapad News: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Annisul Huq asserted that they do not have proper preparation to counter the risk of earthquake.
He made this statement at the inaugural session of a workshop titled ‘Facing Earthquake: Our Role to Play’ at Spectra Convention Centre in city on Monday (January 18).
The workshop was arranged by DNCC in assistance with Plan International Bangladesh and SEEP.
The mayor said, ‘Earthquake is a new concern for us, and even then we have no data about the risky buildings in city. There is a rough estimation that from 70 to 80 lakh buildings are in risk to face any major jolt’.
‘For this reason, we should know more about our duties in facing an earthquake.’
He hoped that the workshop will pave a way regarding the responsibility of the corporation.
‘As a corporation mayor I have to do something to mitigate the risks in city.’
According to mayor, the other corporation people should also realize the issue.
Plan International country director Senait Gebregziabher, among others, delivered speech at the event.
