Dohar man to die for killing sister-in-law
01 March 2015, Nirapad News: A court here on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing his sister-in-law after rape in Dohar upazila nine years ago.
The court also sentenced two other convicts to 14 years imprisonment and fined them Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment. The condemned convict is Alamgir Hossain while the two other convicts are Md Ripon and Rahid Hasan Milon. Among the convicts, Ripon was tried in absentee.
Under another section of Women and Children Repression Act, the court sentenced Alamigr 14 years’ jail and filed him Tk 1 lakh, in default, he will have to suffer two years more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Alamgir with the help of two other convicts abducted Sumi Akhter, wife of Alamgir’s Saudi expatriate brother Shah Alam, on her way to Joypara on July 14, 2006. Later, the woman was gang-raped by the trio and then chopped to death. Her body was recovered from the Ichhamati River on July 17.
Victim’s mother, Kohinur Begum, filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
At last, Ripon and Rahid gave their confessional statement over their involvement in the incident. SI Shawakat Hossain of Dohar police station, also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate court on October 3,2006.
The tribunal framed charges against them on July 13, 2008. After examining the records and witnesses, Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 judge Tanzina Ismail handed down the verdict.
