DU teachers stage token hunger strike against violence
10 February 2015, Nirapad News: Protesting the killing of people and destruction of the country’s education sector in the name of a movement, Dhaka University teachers observed a two-hour token hunger strike on the campus.
The teachers under the banner of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) observed the strike at Battala from 11 am to 1 pm.
Expressing solidarity with the DU teachers, Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr Mizanur Rahman, also a professor of the DU Law Department, joined the program.
Speaking on the occasion, the NHRC chief said the BNP-Jamaat alliance has struck the root of the state and challenged it through resorting to petrol bomb attacks.
Observing that general people and the poor are falling victims to the attacks, he said the government has to take stringent measures in a legal way to ensure the security of people.
Claiming that Khaleda Zia is confined for the self-imposed reasons, former Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Prof Anwar Hossain said at least 80-85 people have been burned to death only because of her.
He also urged the universities to continue their regular activities defying the Hartal and blockade.
Meanwhile, pro-Awami League teachers, employees and students of Barisal University (BU) formed a human chain on the campus demanding an immediate end to the killing of innocent people by ‘BNP-Jamaat’ men.
Speakers at the programme urged the government to take stern measures to curb all kinds of terrorist activities.
Barisal University Teachers’ Association president Arif Hossain, its general secretary MA Kaiyum and assistant registrar Bahauddin Golap, among others, spoke on the occasion.
