Duminy hat-trick paralyses Srilanka

18 March 2015, Nirapad News: South Africa require another 50 runs with 9 wickets and 37.4  overs remaining

South Africa are off to a very good start as they have made 40 runs in six overs losing one of the openers while chasing the small target in the high-pressure match with Sri Lanka. Malinga dismissed Amla at 16.

Sri Lanka earlier managed to score only 133 in 37 overs losing all the wickets in the first quarter-final match in Sydney.

Opener Kusal Perera was dismissed by Abbott at 3 while Steyn sent Dilshan to the pavilion for a duck. Tahir took the wickets of Jayawardene, Thirimanne and Perera. Duminy has taken a hat-trick by stopping Mathews, Kulasekara and Kaushal. Earlier, the Lankans won the toss and elected to bat first.

Sri Lanka, though, didn’t miss a chance of early gamesmanship. The captain Angelo Mathews mentioned pressure on the chasing side.

“Obviously the pressure will take it to them.” He also said the last-minute replacement for the injured Rangana Herath, offspinner Tharindu Kaushal, was a “duplicate Murali” and a “mystery spinner”.

True to nature Sri Lanka made other last-minute changes. Both the incumbent spinners – Seekkuge Prasanna and Sachithra Senannayake – were left out. A new opener, Kusal Perera, was drafted in, pushing Lahiru Thirimanne down the order.

South Africa, on the other hand, wore a settled look with Faf du Plessis’ returning ahead of Farhaan Behardien, making it their strongest XI.

The Proteas have never won a World Cup knockout match since their tournament debut in 1992, with a series of near-misses leaving them with the unwanted tag of “chokers”. On the other hand, Sri Lanka have appeared in the last two World Cup finals and won the tournament back in 1996.
