ECNEC okays 6 projects with Tk 2,744 crore

31 May 2015, Nirapad News: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council on Tuesday (ECNEC) approved a project titled ‘Providing some 25 lakh new power connections through rural electrification’ with Tk 1,228.26 crore in a bid to meet the growing power demand.

The approval came from the 32nd ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year held at the NEC conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that a total of six projects were approved today involving an estimated cost of Tk 2,744.89 crore.

Of the total project cost, Tk 1,154.80 crore will come from the state exchequer while the rest from project assistance, he said.

Of the six projects, four were revised projects while two were new ones.

Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) under the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources will implement the rural electrification project by June 2018.

Of the total amount, Tk 456.86 crore will come from the state exchequer while Tk 771.40 crore as project assistance from the newly formed China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The project will be implemented through 77 Palli Bidyut Samities under the BREB.

The Planning Minister said that there are some 2.15 crore household power connections throughout the country, of which, some 1.50 crore power connections are under the BREB till March, 2016 through 3,0,1000 kilometer lines.

A Planning Commission official said that the BREB has recently conducted a in-house feasibility study where the findings showed that it is possible to provide power connections to some 25 lakh more clients through changing the transformers without setting up any new line within the coverage of BREB under service drop method.

The official said that the main project operations include procurement of some 65,000 new distribution transformers, procurement of some 25 lakh one phase and three phase meters, procurement of some 75,651 kilometer conductors.

The Planning Minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the meeting has directed the Minister concerned for making a full-fledged assessment on the loss of lives and property caused by recent cyclone ‘Roanu’.

Regarding the approval of Emergency 2007 cyclone recovery and restoration project (ECRRP), BWDB portion, 3rd revised with Tk 750.50 crore, the Planning Minister said that Prime Minister asked the authorities concerned to complete the project within the extended timeframe of December 2017 as this timeframe would not be further extended.

Following the approval of the ‘Protection of right embankment of Teesta River under Gangachara and Rangpur Sadar upazila’ with Tk 125.39 crore, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also directed the authorities concerned not to cut top soil of farm land for protecting the embankment rather to use the dredged soil.

The other projects approved in the meeting are Emergency 2007 cyclone recovery and restoration project (ECRRP), D1, DDM, 3rd revised, with Tk 77.44 crore, Teesta Barrage Project (2nd phase), 1st unit,3rd revised, with Tk 413.88 crore and establishment of BCS Economic Academy, 1st revised, with Tk 149.42 crore.

Ministers and State Ministers attended the meeting while Planning Commission members and concerned Secretaries were also present.
