Economist Mahabub Hossain passes away

04 January 2016, Nirapad News: Dr. Mahabub Hossain, a leading economist in the field of agricultural policy and rural development in South and Southeast Asia, died on Sunday night at 2:00am (BDT) in New York. He was 71.

Dr Hossain served as Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), Chief of the Social Sciences Division at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Banos, the Philippines, and Executive Director of BRAC. The Economic Research Group (ERG) in Dhaka deeply mourns the death of the economist. In a condolence message, ERG said that he would be remembered for his pioneering research on rural development, micro-credit, agrarian structure and the rice economy of Asia. “The economics profession in Bangladesh and in the region will miss him greatly,” said the message. “May his soul rest in peace.”
