Election not only precondition for democracy
13 June 2015, Nirapad News: Terming BNP’s boycott of last national election ‘unfortunate’, the British high commissioner to Bangladesh Robert W Gibson on Thursday said election is not the only precondition for democracy.
According to him, democracy is accountability for everyday.
He stated that the UK encourages dialogue among all political parties for sustainable democracy in Bangladesh.
The high commissioner made these remarks while answering the journalists at ‘DCAB Talk’ organized by Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at National Press Club on Thursday.
Replying to a question over recently held city corporations elections in Dhaka and Chittagong, Gibson said he welcomed the polls as he saw a fair environment in the morning of the election day.
But, unfortunately the situation deteriorated later in the day, he added.
We hoped that the authorities concerned will investigate the issues that made the polls questionable. But they did not do it, which is shameful, he commented.
However, the high commissioner praised the democratic practices in Bangladesh.
Regarding Bangladesh’s media freedom, Gibson said that the country has been enjoying freedom of expression. He also put importance on the balance between the freedom of expression and responsibilities of the media.
About the country’s foreign policy, he highly appreciated it saying that Bangabandhu stressed on friendship not enmity with anyone.
On bilateral trade, the high commissioner said that the UK is eager to increase its investment in Bangladesh. He hoped that Bangladesh will enjoy rapid growth if the government curbs corruption and solves other hindrances on the way of attracting foreign investment.
