Emergency response can reduce disaster risks: Jhantu

25 May 2015, Nirapad News: Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has called for ensuring emergency response management systems effectively to reduce disaster risks
during natural disasters.

“Adequate community-based early preparedness can substantially reduce risks of natural disasters like earthquake, losses of lives and properties,” Jhantu, also a valiant freedom fighter, said while presiding over a views-sharing meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

The City Disaster Management Committee (CDMC) and ‘Pollishree’ jointly organised the meeting for the CMDC members at RpCC Hall Room in the city.

The meeting was arranged under ‘Enhancing Inclusive Disaster Resilience in Bangladesh (EIDRB)’ project being implemented with assistance of Oxfam-GB and funding of European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection.

The project is being implemented for institutionalising Community-based Disaster Management Preparedness (CBDP) Model involving local population in association with National Alliance for
Risk Reduction and Response Initiatives Consortium.

Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Ruhul Amin Khan delivered welcome speech narrating goals of the meeting and successes achieved so far in institutionalising the CBDP Model at community levels in the city.

Executive Magistrate of RpCC SM Golam Kibria, Senior Station Officer of Rangpur Fire Service & Civil Defense Shahidul Islam, District Relief & Rehabilitation Officer Faridul Islam, Executive Director of
‘Pollishree’ Shamim Ara Begum, Principal Fakhrul Anam Benzu, Secretary of Rangpur unit of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Shah Md Nabiullah Panna, addressed, among others.

Shahidul Islam discussed on various types of natural disasters, including earthquake, statistics with loses of human lives, properties and suggested way-outs for reducing disaster risks at the urban community levels.

“Coordinated efforts involving public representatives and local community leaders can create awareness and disseminate knowledge on disasters among common people to reduce losses during earthquake and other natural calamities,” he said.

Shah Md Nabiullah Panna called for adopting early preparedness at community levels through disseminating information among the commoners to minimise damages during natural disasters.

The City Mayor stressed on strengthening organisational activities of the CDMC along with ensuring early preparedness, precautionary measures, educating community people on disasters and dissemination of
information to minimise disaster risks.
